You can call us Magnus.

We don’t like doing things by halves here. Sure, taking your business overseas is a bit of a task, but we wanted to shake things up even more. So after 9 years as The Eatery Group, we’ve changed to Magnus Design Office. The change comes as our little creative practice continues to expand its client base to include a lot more sectors than just hospitality, and we couldn’t be more excited. So what does the name mean? Well let’s break it down.

Magnus – We have strategic and personal reasons for this name. The strategic first: Magnus is a latin name with a direct translation to ‘greatest’. As a creative practice, we always aim to produce nothing but great work for our clients, and always aim for our next project to be our greatest yet. So the translation is fitting. From a personal perspective, this name popped into the pool of naming options because, to be frank, we just really like the name.

Design Office – We started our careers as graphic designers, but we never really liked the title. It puts you in a small box we have never been happy with. In truth, in our roles we cover a wide spectrum of design projects, tasks and responsibilities. We’ve designed interiors, products, curated musical programs, directed film projects, helped master plan properties, designs F&B offerings… you get the idea. We don’t just “make logos”; we use our design skills to create realities and solve problems. So we decided to put design front and centre in our name.

“But guys…”, I hear you say, “What’s with the office bit”. Well it comes from the seriousness with which we take our practice and the power we believe design has. Do we have fun? Of course we do! But do we take what we do incredibly seriously? Abso-freaking-lutely. We think the perception of the industry is that we can get a little too playful sometimes, so we want to start the shift towards a more serious approach to the entire industry. We believe calling ourselves a Design Office goes a little way towards shaping perceptions of the design industry, and project the importance of our practice for clients, the industry and ourselves.

So are we leaving hospitality behind? Heck no! We still have an unshakable love for the industry, and it continues to be a very large part of our work. Whilst we have removed ‘Eatery’ from our name, we’re still working with restaurants, bars and hotel projects across Australia (and soon other countries). We have our eye on the world!

So hello from Magnus. We’re more energised, inspired and eager than ever before.
