Random Design Crushes 01 — Public benches by Ian McChesney

The public deserves beautiful things. Period. We will die on this hill. Too often public spaces are developed with a utilitarian hand and the fear of a thousand public law suits. We’re obviously not against practicality and public safety, but these values are not antithetical to creating something beautiful. This is why we love the benches at ‘Granery Square’ in Kings Cross.

Designed by Ian McChesney, the exaggerated proportions and materials make these beautiful benchs feel almost Paleolithic, but as with all good design, the particulars of the finish, measurements, context and details elevate it to a beautiful soft piece of contemporary public design.

Massive design crush on these benches. More photos on Ian’s website.
